Computers and Physical Education

Barrie Becker has been a teacher with Los Angeles County Office of Education for over twenty years. Before coming to LACHSA in 2002 to teach computer technology, she taught performing arts at several Juvenile Court Schools in the Los Angeles area, producing performances at the Music Center, the Los Angeles Convention Center, and at many educational conferences.  She served for nine years as a Mentor Teacher, specializing in technology and the arts.  She has also been named a Lead Teacher with the Instructional Technology Institute and a Fellow of the Digital Media Academy.  Her expertise in technology includes computer applications, graphic design, telecommunications, audio editing, video production, and Web site construction.  She continues to coordinate the School Connectivity Project, an international exchange

program that sent her to Macedonia and Montenegro, and brought a Macedonian teacher to LACHSA.
      Ms. Becker has been recognized for her hard work and dedication by winning the BRAVO award for excellence in Arts Education and the Milken National Educator’s Award.  She has also won the Golden Bell Award, Exemplary Program & Process Awards, and the L.A. Dodger Education Hero Award.  She has earned many grants to help finance her interest in technology; sponsors include Best Buy, Smart Valley, and the California Technology Assistance Project.
      Ms. Becker holds a Standard Secondary Teaching Credential, granted for Life.  She earned a B.A. degree from Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut, and an M.A. degree in Education from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. As a life-long learner, she has pursued many post-graduate studies at various California universities.

Ray Alcala graduated in 1993 from St. Paul High School. Mr. Alcala then completed his undergraduate work at Cal Poly Pomona were he obtained his Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training. While at Cal Poly Pomona, he successfully completed an athletic training internship, passed the NATA exam and became a certified athletic trainer. He holds a single subject teaching credential in Physical Education. He recently completed his Master’s of Arts degree in Kinesiology at CSULA.  Ray Alcala has 7 years of classroom teaching experience with various age groups. He taught six years with the LAUSD, at a magnet elementary school, as well as a middle school setting. He also taught at St Paul High School, in Santa Fe Springs, were he served as the Anatomy instructor and Head Athletic Trainer for the Athletic dept.
     He enjoys working with computers and playing many different sports. He currently resides in the City of Whittier with his wife, Lorraine, and their two boys, Matthew and Andrew.
