Enjoy Benjamin Britten’s version of John Gay’s classic “ballad opera” -- a satire full of mirth and mischief that initiated a new era in music and theatre – and join the Full Circle Opera Project’s eleventh year making artistic history in Los Angeles county.About THE BEGGAR’S OPERA … This ribald classic depicts the British underclass striving to achieve love, money and prestige, by hook or by crook. Macheath is a lady’s man and thief whose loyal wife Polly and saucy girlfriend Lucy battle for his favors while their quirky and conniving parents conspire to do him in and steal his pilfered fortune. In an era when high-brow Italian opera owned the stage, John Gay stole the show with this timeless satire, using popular melodies and common language to mock the moral corruption that riddles the lives of rich and poor alike.
