• Congratulations to Theatre senior Bronwyn Reed for winning FIRST PLACE in the 2008 English Speaking Union’s Shakespeare Competition held in New York at the Lincoln Center. 16, 000 students and 2,000 teachers participated in the international competition designed to help students with their skills, interpretation, and performance of Shakespeare’s monologues and sonnets. The grand prize is a trip to
England to study acting in the summer.

• Congratulations to Zack Tatum-Nolan and Ember Knight for winning the THIRD PLACE TROPHY at the annual DTASC (Drama Teachers of Southern California) Shakespeare Festival. The couple competed against over 300 students in that category to take home a top prize.
In addition, congratulations go to Heather Rubin, Erik Mesa, Michelle Sui, John Bezark and Lily Ali-Oshatz for taking the SECOND PLACE
TROPHY
in the group Shakespeare category, competing against
more than 500 students to take home this prestigious award.

• Congratulations to Marielle Eisner, Brendan Stampley, Mia Chua, Zoe Randal, and Elizabeth Goodrich for winning the FIRST PLACE TROPHY in group scene at the 2008 Cal Poly Shakespeare Festival.

• Congratulations to Noah Prestwich, Thomas Banuelos, and Nicole Nelson-Campos for taking THIRD PLACE TROPHY at the Long Beach
Theatre Festival.

• Scholarship for Seniors: Sunny Brown Memorial Scholarship 2008
For Theatre Seniors: The application for the Sunny Brown Memorial Scholarship is available in the Theatre Office. This scholarship is awarded for outstanding achievement in performing arts. It is the desire of the Sunny Brown Foundation to provide a merit based scholarship to an outstanding senior theatre student who wishes to pursue a degree at an accredited college or university. The recipient will receive a $10,000 scholarship grant.

  • Candidates must be a US citizen and graduating from high school.
  • Each recipient must further their education in the theatre arts.
  • Each recipient must attend a college or university or attend an accredited professional company or private institution allowing them to study and train in their artistic field.
  • Each recipient must show outstanding talent, commitment, artistic goals, contribution and ability in the theatre arts while attending high school.

DEADLINE: FRIDAY, MAY 9, 2008. No late applications accepted.

Place your application in Mrs. Hunter’s mailbox in the main office or the Theatre Office.

• Congratulations to senior, Zack Tatum-Nolan, for taking First Place in the monologue category at the 2008 Chapman Shakespeare Festival.

• Congratulations to senior, Bronwyn Reed, for winning the $5,000
Cerritos Friends of the Arts Competition in Theatre. In addition,
Bronwyn took First Place in the English Speaking Union’s Shakespeare Competition and will go to New York to represent LACHSA’s Theatre Department and all of Los Angeles in the National Competition in April.

• Congratulations to senior, Analisa Watkins, for winning the First Place trophy in Comedic Monologue and the Third Place trophy for Classical Monologue at the Fullerton Theatre Festival. This festival is the largest in California, attracting over 10,000 students who “camp” overnight at the college. Analisa competed against more than 800 students in each of her categories.

• Congratulations to Theatre Department faculty member, Jon Kellam. He is the 2008 recipient of the prestigious SURDNA Arts Teachers Fellowship. This fellowship helps to support the artistic revitalization of outstanding arts teachers in public schools. This is the third year in a row that a LACHSA Theatre Department teacher has won this illustrious fellowship. Mr. Kellam joins faculty members Vicky Silva and Flora Plumb as SURDNA fellows. Mr. Kellam will spend his summer in Italy, studying Commedia dell’arte.

• Congratulations to the LACHSA Theatre Department for receiving a $3,000,000 grant from the Office of Public School Construction and the California Department of Education to support the implementation of their new technical theatre education curriculum and facility, which is scheduled to begin in 2010 with the opening of the new LACHSA building on the CSULA campus.
