Art Departments: TV / FILM

The TV/Film program at Arts High is where the creative mind and technology coalesce. Students learn to capture art using many different forms, in many different settings. The TV/Film program teaches students to keep art and creativity alive.

Film Production is taught by Professional Director Ron Walsh. Using a single video camera, the students are taught the techniques of film production. They learn about the camera, directing actors and the various aspects of production. Many times students write their own scripts. The class consists of a beginning elective taught during the academic period. In addition, a 4 1/2 hour Friday class is held on the practical aspects of filming.

Both TV Production and Film Production culminate in the editing booth where the students are taught linear editing and then the various newer, ever changing techniques of computer editing.

Ron Walsh, Chair of TV/Film, began his career as an actor working in theatre, film and television before going behind the camera where he spent thirty-five years in film production. He began as an assistant film editor, then moved into production and came through the ranks as a second assistant director, first assistant director, unit production manager, director and producer. This included feature films, television films, TV series, TV commercials and non theatrical films. He has worked for most of the major studios as well as independent production companies, and he had his own production company for ten years. He has been a member of the Directors Guild of America for thirty-eight years. Mr. Walsh is in his seventh year teaching filmmaking classes at LACHSA. Currently he is teaching two beginning filmmaking classes, an intermediate filmmaking class which is a study of various film genres, and an advanced filmmaking class that includes studying the directing styles of various master film directors.
